Beach town by day, pilgrimage site at its centre
Gokarna is unusual among the destinations on this site in having two distinct identities at once. At its centre is the Mahabaleshwar Temple, a 4th-century Shiva shrine built by the Kadamba dynasty, regarded as one of the seven sacred Muktisthalas and second in significance only to Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi. Around the town, five separate beaches — Om Beach, Kudle Beach, Gokarna (Main) Beach, Half Moon Beach and Paradise Beach — draw both pilgrims and backpackers for very different reasons.
A group wanting to genuinely experience both sides of Gokarna — darshan at the temple, and more than just the one beach nearest the temple — needs a vehicle that can move between locations across the visit, rather than relying on local transport once there.
